5 Differences Between the UK and Canada

While both English speaking countries, Canada and the UK have a number of cultural and  colloquial differences. Many of these aren’t noticed until you move between the countries. Before you move from one to the other, make sure you’re aware of these major differences.

Different Words, Same Meaning

Wording choices are different and some of the first things you’ll notice in a move. This is more than “trash/rubbish” or “diapers/nappies.” Food can be known as something different, like eggplants for aubergines and zucchinis instead of courgettes. Then there’s “Emerg” in place of “A&E.” In fact, if you say “A&E” in Canada, they’ll think you’re talking about a network and not the emergency department at the hospital!

Taxes Are Managed Differently

In the UK, you’ll only need to fill in a tax return every year if you’re self-employed, earn over a certain amount or have specific income to report. In Canada, everyone fills out a tax return. The timing is different, with Canadian tax forms due in April for the last calendar year and the UK forms due in January for the last tax year! This can take some time getting used to but there is software to make it painless.

There’s no diluted juice

In the UK, you’ll have what’s referred to as squash. It’s a diluting juice that can go a long way! In Canada, this isn’t as easy to find. Sure, there will be some in British shops and you can spend a fortune on Ribena, but that’s about it. The squash you’re thinking of right now is frozen punch, and you dilute the whole frozen can in one go. This can be a big shock for some Brits, as they look for alternatives to drink throughout the day without relying on soda.

The Need for Different Wardrobes

Ever heard of having a summer wardrobe and a winter one? Most Brits haven’t, since there’s a three-day summer at the most! In Canada, it’s possible to actually get all four seasons at the standard times of the year. The winters are freezing with plenty of snow and summers with sometimes nearing 40C+ heat. You’ll want to have the right wardrobe for your activities and listen to weather warnings on the radio!

Roads Are Difference

The differences on the roads are more than the side on which to drive. The rules of the roads change per province in Canada, and even by city! Then there’s the fact that the amount of cars on the road is different. The UK is packed everywhere you go. In Canada, you can go long stretches without seeing another car. Until you hit Toronto! Then you will be stuck in traffic jams for hours at a time. Getting around the major cities will be the only time you have to consider paying for the toll road.
